Ecotrope "Varlama Island — the pearl of Pasvik" is a walking route on the territory of the youngest reserve of the Murmansk region — Pasvika. The route allows you to get acquainted with several biotopes at once: mixed pine-birch forest, swamp, swampy river banks. These places, rich in shallow waters, serve as a great refuge for waterfowl and near-water birds. The island has excellent conditions for amateur ornithology.


The route runs from the eastern border of the reserve in the southern part of the protected area and goes to Varlama Island, then along the island itself in its southern half.The territory is rich in natural diversity. The trail passes through several biotopes: mixed pine-birch forest, birch forest, swamp, swampy river banks, meadows. These places, rich in shallow waters, serve as a great refuge for waterfowl and near-water birds. There are excellent conditions for amateur ornithology on the island.The route has historical, cultural and natural value, plays an important role in the tourist attractiveness of the Pechenga district.


The house-museum of the researcher Hans Skonning, the remains of buildings and other traces of human activity will help to learn many interesting and even amazing facts about the history of the region.
If you bring sandwiches or cookies with you, we can organize a small tea party right on the protected island.

Rules of behavior in natural areasDear tourists, when visiting natural areas, remember that your stay should be safe for nature.

  4. Do not touch the chicks that have fallen out of the nest;
  5. Don't dig holes;
  6. Do not move off/off existing roads/trails;
  7. Do not break tourist parking lots and do not light bonfires outside specially designated areas;
  8. Don't leave any garbage behind;
  9. Do not turn on sound amplifying devices unnecessarily;
  10. Take care of our nature – the basis of life on Earth!
