Legends of Seydozero

The sacred lake of the Sami — Seydozero — is full of ancient legends and mysticism. Therefore, we begin the section dedicated to the legends of the Murmansk region with it.

Kuiva the Giant

One of the main legends of Seidozero is associated with Kuiva — a fairy-tale giant spirit. More precisely, it is mentioned in several legends at once. Kuiva was a fearsome leader of the enemy tribes and terrified the lapps with his cruelty, robbing and killing them. The Sami prayed to the gods to protect them. According to legend, the gods heard the Sami and struck Kuiva with lightning bolts that flew out of the waters of the Seidozero. So on the rock there was a trace of the burned body of the giant.

However, there are still legends about the appearance of the drawing. According to one of them, it is imprinted in the stone "shvety", which robbed the Sami.

According to another — the Chudsky military leader who decided to conquer the tundra, but was defeated, according to the third Kuiva is a sorcerer who kidnapped a Sami girl and locked her in a rock, while he remained to guard her.

The bas-relief of the Kuiva protrudes from the wall for 3-4 meters in some places, maybe that's why the seid is also called "Dancing Kuiva": if you swim or quickly drive along it, it will seem that the figure is moving.

Seydozero's Mystique

Many other myths and rumors about anomalous phenomena occurring in its vicinity are also associated with the Seydozero. Many people tried to check and solve them.

Numerous expeditions of scientists and researchers are held here. So, many believe that it was here that Hyperborea was located — a legendary ancient civilization. And the searchers even found traces of it in the form of huge remnants of structures.

The locals also talk about the unusual structure of the Seydozero itself. Allegedly, under the water surface there is a second bottom, a lake under the lake. There is also a belief that the lake can be waded if you know the path. However, to test this, the daredevils have not yet been found.

The owner of the lake likes silence

Do not risk the locals and make noise off the coast. The forest spirit — Metz-vujnas-lives in Sami myths. A dark creature, furry. He does no harm to people if they do not annoy him. If they sing songs in the forest, shout, raise a noise, then Metz-vujnas may get angry and you will not find your way back. That's why the old people say: the forest loves peace and quiet.

There is a legend about the owner of the lake. He has three daughters, and the owner presents those fishermen with a rich catch, who will make equal gifts to his daughters (they served as beads, coins) and will not make noise. The boats moved noiselessly, the nets were not thrown — they were lowered slowly into the water, and not a single word was spoken. And then the catch promised to be fabulously rich.

In ancient times, the Sami did not dare to pierce the ice body of the lakes in winter, for fear of causing trouble.

The Sami fishermen also used to say that white swans-built nests on the Seydozero, and it was as if they were not swans at all, but the souls of their Lop ancestors, who guarded the lake from evil eyes from early spring to late autumn. Beautiful, isn't it?
