The warmth of the Russian Arctic: when to plan your trip

Traveling North is associated with cold and permafrost. However, in the case of the Murmansk region, this is not entirely true. The climate here is harsh and not familiar, but there are usually no big disadvantages. When is it better to go to explore the region and what to be prepared for in each of the seasons of the year?

Summer

One of the most popular seasons for traveling to the Murmansk region. And it's not only about the comfortable air temperature (on average + 11 ° - + 14 ° C), but also about the famous polar day. You can see this unique natural phenomenon from late May to late July, during this period you can walk and enjoy nature both day and night. However, when going on a trip to the Murmansk region, do not forget to take a raincoat, waterproof shoes and change of clothes with you, since the weather on the Kola Peninsula is quite changeable and unpredictable.

We advise you to choose a trip in summer for those who wish to enjoy ecological tourism, the incomparable nature of the region and travel plenty of excursions and expeditions.

Autumn

With the onset of autumn, the daylight hours are rapidly shortened, and the air temperature drops. However, it is at this time that nature is painted in stunning colors. Those who want to see the tundra in bright colors and enjoy the comfort of autumn evenings, we advise you to come in September. Closer to November, the rich decoration will cover the snow. The average daily temperature is +4° — +8° C. Do not forget warm clothes, and if you go on a hike, do not neglect the advice of experienced guides about thermal underwear and winter clothing.

Winter

Thanks to the opportunity to see the northern lights, winter in the Murmansk region is a very busy tourist season. And if the main purpose of your trip is a colorful sky with a "dancing" Aurora, then the most popular months are December and January. At the same time, in addition to the northern lights, cold weather and polar night come to the region (from December 02 to January 10). During the day, the air temperature drops to an average of -12-15 ° C. However, due to the high humidity, it feels much colder. Aurora hunts take place in the evening and at night and you need to be prepared to spend a few hours outdoors. Be sure to pack high-soled winter boots, thermal underwear and warm outerwear in your suitcase.

Spring

Spring in the Murmansk region is short. As a rule, these are April and May. By this time, the snow has almost completely melted, but snowfalls are frequent. At the end of May, the period of the polar day begins, at the latitude of Murmansk it begins on May 22. It's time to admire the blossoming nature!
