The results of the interregional competition of the best practices of the use of monumental painting in the improvement of the urban environment of public and courtyard territories in the cities of the Arctic zone of the Russian Federation, which was organized as part of the Bering Strait Festival, have been announced. The murals of Murmansk and Kandalaksha are among the winning objects.

The festival takes place in Anadyr from 2 to 7 August. Its goal is to encourage and disseminate the best implemented projects in the field of improvement of polar cities.

7 regions took part in the competition, 47 applications passed the qualifying round. The works were evaluated in two categories: "The best design of monumental painting in Artik" and "The best use of modern materials and techniques in the creation of monumental painting in Artik" (special prize).

The Murmansk mural "Sweater with bears" took the second place in the nomination "The best design of monumental painting in the Arctic". Its author is the chairman of the Murmansk branch of the Union of Artists of Russia, a specialist of the Center for Urban Development of the Murmansk Region, Maria Mikhailenko. The object was created in 2019, was included in the collection "100 murals of Russia".

The jury awarded the mural from Kandalaksha the victory in the nomination "The best use of modern materials and techniques in the creation of monumental painting in Artika". The author of the idea is Alexander Trunkovsky, artist Anastasia Andriashina. The facility was created in 2021 in accordance with the developed design code of the city.

According to the regional Ministry of Urban Planning and Landscaping, monumental painting on the facades of buildings and technical structures solves a number of important tasks: individualizes space, creates local points of attraction and helps in navigation, and also minimizes the likelihood of vandalism. According to statistics, inscriptions and advertisements appear much less frequently in locations with a mural.

Systematic work with murals in the capital of the Kola Arctic has been underway since 2019. Thanks to the urban art festival "Growth", more than 30 murals have been created in the Leninsky District of Murmansk in two years.

The project is included in the comprehensive action plan "Our Murmansk", which is included in the people's strategy "In the North-to live. 2030", created on the initiative of Governor Andrey Chibis based on the wishes of the residents of the region.
