The Kandalaksha State Nature Reserve was established on September 7, 1932 to protect the common gaga, a sea duck that has long been famous for the valuable qualities of nest fluff. It is located on more than 550 islands.
Where the long and dark polar winter gives way to a short summer with the sun not setting, where the harsh shores are washed by the waters of two seas, the Barents and the White, the Kandalaksha State Nature Reserve is located on more than 550 islands. It was formed on September 7, 1932 to protect the common gaga, a sea duck that has long been famous for the valuable qualities of nest fluff.
The territory of the reserve consists of 13 sites. Most of the sites are marine archipelagos with adjacent water areas. In 1975, the Kandalaksha Bay of the White Sea within the Murmansk Region was included in the list of wetlands of international importance as a habitat for waterfowl.
