"Lapland State Natural Biosphere Reserve"
Add to the journey
Before the creation of the reserve, people had never lived here. Almost all of its territory is represented by wild untouched nature, which is the main value of the reserve. It is one of the largest protected areas in Northern Europe: the area of the reserve is 278,435 hectares.
Today, the reserve is still a wild untouched nature, home to the western population of wild reindeer, which numbers about 1,000 individuals.
The complete lack of population of the territory and its total protection gives the reserve the highest cultural value: the ancestors of the original inhabitants of the Kola Peninsula lived on this land. The Lapland Nature Reserve plays a huge role not only in preserving the biological diversity of plants and animals, maintaining ecological stability in the region, but is also part of the history of the Murmansk region.
