Yelyavruay Creek
Add to the journey
The Yelyavruai Stream originates in Lake Yelyavr and flows into Lake Chuna.
Due to the strong drop in levels (more than 40 meters), the stream is rapid, and in most parts of the riverbed it does not freeze even in the most severe frosts. The water, as in most reservoirs of the Kola Peninsula, is slightly mineralized, transparent and cold.
Along the banks of the stream grows forest geranium, European globe-flower, marsh marigold, queen-of-the-meadow, harebell, great willow herb, viola. At the water's edge, in thickets of sedges and willows, there is alpine and common butterwort, and rowan, willow and alder hang over the water.
The Yelyavruay stream is rich not only in near-water vegetation, but also in wildlife. A dipper bird lives on the stream. In Sami, the dipper is "kushk-kargench", which means "runner on the rifts". This bird is also called "water thrush" or "water sparrow" because of its ability to dive into the water and swim freely.
Also at the stream you can meet a frog, a viper, a fox, a hare, a marten.
But the main wealth of the Yelyavruai stream is brook trout. In appearance, it differs from other types of trout in red-orange spots, for which it was nicknamed the pestrushka.
