Monument to the Arctic Border Guards
Add to the journey
The author of the monument to the Arctic border guards was the Honored Sculptor of Russia Ivan Melnikov from Smolensk.
Above the pedestal, symbolizing the harsh northern rocks, rises the border sign. Three border guards stood around him, guarding the land, sea, and air borders. They stand back to back, weapons at the ready, and their faithful friend, the border dog, stands forever at their feet.
Together with the defenders of the borders of the motherland, Ivan Melnikov immortalized in bronze the legendary border post A-35, which stood on the Musta-Tunturi ridge. The border guards took the first blow of the German troops on June 29, 1941. For several years they fought bravely on the banks of the Titovka and Lotta rivers, on the Musta-Tunturi ridge and near Kandalaksha. It was on the Kola Peninsula that the enemy was never able to fully cross the Soviet border.
Many years have passed since the Victory Day, and border guards still reliably cover the north-western borders of the country. After all, today the Murmansk region borders immediately with 2 states-Norway and Finland, and is the base for the protection of the sea borders of Russia in the The Arctic.
