Add to the journey
To see the life and everyday life of the Pomors, to touch the history of the region, to admire traditional outfits and to observe the ordinary life of Kandalaksha 100-200 years ago — all this can be done in the museum of the history of the city of Kandalaksha. The museum keeps a lot of exhibits that are interesting not only to specialists, but also to tourists.
The museum has two permanent exhibitions. The first one is "Crafts and life of the Pomors", where household items of the XIX — XX centuries, clothing, equipment of fishermen and hunters are presented. A special place is given to fisheries. For example, the side of a shnyaka (a fishing vessel for cod fishing) is shown. It was made using wooden rivets and tree roots. It is very interesting to look at the objects that used to be in every Pomor hut: millstones for grinding grain, a bread shovel, chests for storing clothes, in such chests the Pomor girls kept their dowry.
The second exposition is devoted to the fighting in the Kandalaksha direction, which reflects the military history of the region during the Great Patriotic War.
Thematic exhibitions, museum classes and lectures on local history are also held in the museum's exhibition halls. You can walk around the museum on your own, or book an excursion. Local experts will tell you a lot of interesting legends of the region.
