Murmansk, Oktyabrsky district

As in In St. Petersburg, consider the steps, climbing to the top of St. Isaac's Cathedral, and in Murmansk keep score on the stairs to the monument to the 6th heroic battery. It stands on a hill near Lenin Avenue near the Varnichny Stream.

This memorable object is not a prop, but a real weapon mounted on a pedestal. Before the war, the 143rd Artillery Regiment of the 14th Rifle Division, which included the 6th battery, was located on the island of Kildin, but later was transferred to Murmansk, which was mercilessly bombed by German planes. Our soldiers successfully stood for their native city. On September 14, 1941, the enemy surrounded the gunners from the Polar Division. 37 people, led by Lieutenant Grigory Lysenko, were killed. In memory of the feat, a monument was opened on November 6, 1959.

The architect D. K. Vodolazhsky helped in its creation. The memorial object is a 76-mm military divisional gun of the ZIS-3 brand of the 1942 model on a pedestal lined with gray-green tiles and a "ragged" northern stone. Its barrel is pointed to the north-west, and this is not accidental — enemy planes were flying from there to Murmansk. In 1991, the reburial of the remains of the fighters took place. In 1994, a black marble slab was installed with 71 names of the heroes who died on the battery. Next to the slab is a bronze wreath.

During the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Victory in May 1965, front-line soldiers and young soldiers came to the place of death of the Polar Division fighters and lit a symbolic fire there. Its particles were placed in a bowl at the monument to the 6th Heroic battery — so here for the first time lit the Eternal Flame, which burned from 1965 to 1975, and then was transferred to the "Alyosha".
