Monument to the steadfastness and courage of the Murmansk people during the Great Patriotic War (monument to the chimney)
Add to the journey
Murmansk is a hero city. According to the number of bombings and fallen shells (almost 185 thousand!) it gives way only to Stalingrad. When the Great Patriotic War ended, the city was difficult to recognize. It was almost wiped out.
Only during the bombing of Murmansk on June 18, 1942, about half of the buildings were destroyed. This day was the blackest in the history of the hero city. And gave the basis for the regional Day of Perseverance and Courage of Murmansk residents during the Great Patriotic War. Famous photos of the legendary military photographer Yevgeny Khaldei show that in Murmansk there were only chimneys. That is why a monument to the resilience and courage of the Murmansk people during the Great Patriotic War appeared on the southern shore of Semenovsky Lake. Or, in the vernacular, a monument to the chimney. The pictures of the Soviet chronicler became the basis for the sketch. It is almost 4 meters high.
The chimney was specially burned to give authenticity and remind of the fires of the war. Near the monument there are two viewing platforms: one on the central part of the site, the second-near the coastal area of the lake. So in Murmansk in June 2017, there was not just a monument, but a memorial complex.
