The Museum of the Northern Fleet Air Forces was opened in Safonovo village on August 20, 1976, in the year of the 40th anniversary of the creation of the first aviation unit in the Northern Fleet. But in those years it was called the Aviation Museum of the Red Banner Northern Fleet. He was placed in the village of Safonovo, where the first airfield for seaplanes appeared and Yuri Gagarin served.

It was built by the North Sea aviators themselves, and the exhibits are not props, but real objects and objects for service from the collection of aircraft and helicopters of the war and post-war period (many were found in the hills after the Great Patriotic War and reconstructed) to the costumes of pilots. There are also photographic materials about the history of the Northern Fleet, including the authorship of the famous military photojournalist Yevgeny Khaldei, personal belongings of veteran aviators from the North Sea, including fifty-three Heroes of the Soviet Union.

Sculptures of People's Artist of the USSR L.E. Kerbel and Honored Worker of Culture of the Russian Federation E.I. Kitaychuk, works of artist V.M. Vovka are presented. The museum has three halls: wartime, memory of the dead, post-war period. A special attraction of the museum is the house—museum where Yuri Gagarin lived. The structure was brought from the village of Korzunovo (Luostari) in 1983. Memorial rooms were recreated in it and an exposition was placed that will tell how the first cosmonaut served in the air force of the Northern Fleet. In 2013, the Safonovo Museum became a branch of the Federal State state Institution of Culture and Art "Naval Museum of the Northern Fleet" of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

The village of Safonovo is part of the city of Severomorsk and a pass must be issued to visit it.
