The purpose of the creation of the reserve was to protect hunting and commercial birds and animals, especially elk and reindeer, and at present it is of a complex nature and serves to preserve in the natural state of natural complexes-the habitat of rare animals and plants, as well as to ensure the conditions for their reproduction.
The vegetation is represented by pine and spruce rare-coniferous forests of the northern taiga subzone. It is important that significant areas of old-growth forests have been preserved here.
Swamps also play a significant role. The flora of the reserve is characterized by a great variety of species: there are more than 400 species of vascular plants and more than 150 species of lichens. Of these, 22 species of vascular plants are protected in the Murmansk region and 2 species (Calypso bulbous from the orchid family and polushnik ozerny) are listed in the Red Book of Russia.
The animal world is also diverse: lynx, wolverine, whooper swan, peregrine falcon, white-tailed eagle, osprey and others. Twelve species, including whooper swan, osprey, peregrine falcon, kestrel, gray crane, bearded owl and others, are protected by the Red Book of the Murmansk region, and the osprey and peregrine falcon are also protected by the Red Book of Russia.
