Nature Reserve "Varzugsky"
Add to the journey
The reserve was established on November 10, 1982. Its objectives include conducting research and activities to preserve the salmon population, studying and protecting the habitats and abundance of the European pearl oyster, preserving the natural landscapes of the coastal strips of rivers and preventing pollution of the Varzuga River and its tributaries.
The vegetation here is represented by the main types of rare-coniferous forests of the northern taiga subzone. Spruce and pine forests, as well as swampy forests, are mainly distributed. The flora of the reserve includes more than 380 species of vascular plants from 66 families. Among them there are 7 species listed in the Red Book of the Murmansk region and 2 species-in the Red Book of Russia.
In the clear waters of the Varzuga basin, many valuable fish species live and spawn, for example, various forms of trout, grayling, whitefish. Only here on the Kola Peninsula is the common dace found. At the bottom of the riverbeds, the bivalve mollusk European pearl oyster, listed in the Red Book of the Murmansk Region, is marked. In the forests, many "red book" species of animals are noted: wolverine, lynx, bearded owl, gray crane, northern leatherhead, otter, and others.
