Glendonite "Belomorskaya rogulka"
Add to the journey
There are only a few places on the globe where you can find this rare natural formation! And one of them is the coastal surroundings of the village of Olenitsa in the Tersk district. Glendonite got its name from the town of Glenbrook in Australia, where it was first discovered. In our country, on the Kola Peninsula, it received a very nice home name "Belomorskaya rogulka" - thanks to its often occurring shape of a ball with horns. The processes on the stone are bizarre and diverse. Glendonites resemble sea urchins, snowflakes, corals, prickly plants, stars.
Glendonite is a kind of calcite - its pseudomorphosis - that is, it is formed as a result of the substitution of one mineral by another, preserving the original shape of crystals. The mineral is formed in cold salt water. Crystallization occurs at the bottom of the sea or in ice. Fresh bagels have a brown color with a honey tint, then they discolor and become light gray or grayish-brown.
Glendonites are valued by collectors, used as amulets or jewelry, and are just good souvenirs. But it is worth noting that "the activities of unknown persons for the extraction of glendonite in the village of Olenitsa is the unauthorized use of the subsoil and violates the federal law "On Subsoil". And you can admire the excellent collection of glendonites at the Amestista Museum at the children's library in the village of Umba https://murmansk.travel/places/1156
