Walk through the city

Something interesting happens almost every day in the Kirov Palace of Culture. In different years, its walls took in the funds of museums, actors of the regional drama theater performed here, there was a cinema where silent films were played, and even a school worked.

The Palace of Culture was conceived as a House of Culture for fishermen. The place for the construction was chosen as a landmark, in the very center of the city on Pushkinskaya Street, next to the future square of Five Corners. Not far from the main entrance you will see a wooden cross. In its place there was to be a temple in honor of the patron saint of sailors Nicholas of Myra, here was laid the first stone of Romanov-on-Murmansk, the city that is now called Murmansk.

Architect Nikolai Miturich saw the palace in the style of constructivism. DC im. Kirov was officially opened on November 7, 1932. On February 23, 1949, he celebrated his second birthday: during the Great Patriotic War, the building was almost completely destroyed, only the gym remained, so everything was rebuilt anew.  Today, the Palace is still home to dozens of creative groups.

Here KVN teams, vocal ensembles of folk and author's songs, dance ensembles, choirs, folk drama theater and amateur circus rehearse and perform. There are meetings of astronomy enthusiasts, photographers, needlewomen, and even a yoga center. The Kirov Palace of Culture is a constant place for festive meetings in honor of the Birthday of the Murmansk region or Murmansk, film festivals, the beauty contest "Beauty of the Arctic", the inauguration of governors and the head of the regional center. Laima Vaikule, Alexander Gradsky, Sergey Penkin, Didyulya, Valery Gergiev and the Mariinsky Orchestra performed on its stage.

The palace was visited by such famous people as Yuri Gagarin, Konstantin Simonov, Fidel Castro, Isaac Dunaevsky, Sergei Obraztsov. The recreation center has a winter garden, where you can even arrange a photo shoot, and is open to visitors and excursions of the zoo corner.

After listening to Pavel Viktorovich Fedorov's podcast "Architectural Walks in Murmansk", you will learn how the pre-war appearance of this building differed from the modern one, and what celebrities visited it.
