Add to the journey
Only the foundation of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary has survived to this day. In 2003, in the part of the foundation, where the altar of the church was previously located, a Poklonniy wooden cross was installed in memory of the destruction of the Kandalaksha monastery in 1589.
The church stood on the edge of a flat sandy area of the northern coastal slope. In the middle of the 16th century, the five-domed Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary was the main temple of the Kandalaksha Bogoroditsko-Rozhdestvensky monastery. The bell tower had four bells, one of them was a gift from Ivan the Terrible. The monastery and church were destroyed by the Swedes during the attack on Kandalaksha at the end of the 16th century, and then rebuilt with government support. After the abolition of the Kandalaksha monastery, the church became a cemetery. During the Crimean War, the temple was burnt down by English sailors, but 10 years later it was rebuilt. During the Soviet period, the church was closed and then dismantled.
