War memorial at the central cemetery of Kandalaksha
Add to the journey
On October 17, 2007, a military memorial complex dedicated to the soldiers who died during the Great Patriotic War was solemnly opened at the central cemetery of Kandalaksha. The previous one, built in the late 70s, has fallen into disrepair over the past decades and needed major repairs. If at first it was about its reconstruction, then thanks to the Kandalaksha aluminum plant, a new memorial was erected. Work began in 2006. The design was determined: the development of Andrey Yushkov was taken as a basis. They left only the old bas-reliefs, which were put in order. The new sculpture - the center of the composition - was commissioned by the Murmansk sculptor Alexander Arsentiev. The entire appearance and design of the memorial was agreed with the administration of the urban settlement, the council of veterans. The memorial looks very solid. Red slabs set off the gray figure of a soldier. The names of the dead defenders of Kandalaksha are carved on four granite blocks.
