The monument perpetuates the memory of Severomorsk people who died during the Great Patriotic War.
This is a figure of a sailor with a submachine gun in his hands, mounted on a pedestal made in the form of a submarine cabin. On the side faces of the pedestal, there are bronze bas-reliefs on which military units, units and ships of the fleet, the most distinguished during the Great Patriotic War, are indicated.
Primorskaya Square is a favorite place not only for residents of the North Sea, but also for city guests. The monument to the Heroes of the North Sea — defenders of the Soviet Arctic is a visiting card of the capital of the Northern Fleet. The most important city events are held at the monument on Primorskaya Square: holidays (such as Victory Day, Day of the Navy), rallies, military parades, and folk festivities. Visiting the monument and laying flowers is an obligatory part of the visit program for high-ranking guests (including the President of the Russian Federation, foreign guests).
The figure of the sailor was cast at the Leningrad plant «Monumentskulptura». Sculptors: Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts, People’s Artist of the RSFSR Georgy Vasilyevich Neroda, Honored Artist of the RSFSR Yuri Georgievich Neroda. Architects: the oldest Moscow architect Alexei Nikolaevich Dushkin, lieutenant colonel-engineer Anatoly Alekseevich Shashkov.
Severomorsk engineer S. V. Kuznetsov made the most complex calculation of the 35-ton frame and supervised the execution of the working drawing, exercising designer supervision. The texts on the bas-reliefs were prepared by the head of the Naval Museum of the Northern Fleet Fyodor Antonovich Nekhoroshkov, and the sketches of the bas-reliefs in full size were prepared by Anatoly Alekseevich Shashkov.
The commission appointed for the project was headed by the Severomorsk submariner Hero of the Soviet Union Vice Admiral Grigory Ivanovich Shchedrin. The project of the monument was approved by the commander of the Northern Fleet, Admiral Semyon Mikhailovich Lobov.
