Murmansk, Trade Unions street

On May 9, 1958, a monument to the Hero of the Soviet Union Anatoly Fedorovich Bredov was unveiled at the intersection of Lenin Avenue and Trade Unions Street.

It is difficult not to see this monument if you are in Murmansk. Just walk around the city center to see the monument. The monument to A. F. Bredov is located in front of the government building of the Murmansk region, a few steps from the Central Stadium of Trade Unions.

The feat of Bredov is so respected by the Murmansk residents that they decided to immortalize the figure of the hero in bronze with their own money. The idea was proposed by cadets of the Higher Maritime School. To get funds for the monument, the northerners collected waste paper and scrap metal. Two years of labor, and on May 9, 1958, a three-meter figure of Anatoly Bredov appeared on a granite pedestal at the intersection of Lenin Avenue and Trade Unions Street. The sculptors were Grigory Yastrebenetsky, Alexey Dolinenko, Vladimir Tatarovich, and the architect was Andrey Antonov.
They captured the moment of the feat in metal.

Anatoly Bredov went to the front from the Murmansk shipyard in the spring of 1942. He asked to fight for the Motherland. In the autumn of 1944, the 155th Regiment, where Bredov was the commander of the machine-gun squad, went to storm the Roadside hill near the Titovka-Petsamo road. The Germans shot all our soldiers, only the gunner Nikita Ashurkov and Anatoly Bredov himself remained alive. From the enemies, they began to defend themselves with grenades. When there was only one left, the fighters hugged each other and blew themselves up to avoid being captured. Surprisingly, Ashurkov survived. Bredov was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.

The mother and father of the hero at the opening of the monument were shocked by its appearance. It's so piercing. The three-meter bronze sculpture depicts a soldier at the moment of the highest tension of all his spiritual and physical forces. The person expresses determination, readiness to fulfill his military duty to the end. The fluttering floors of the raincoat-tent emphasize the impetuosity of the movement. The tunic tightly fits the strong body, the right hand is raised high and clutches a grenade. His knee rests on a block of granite, the soulless calm of which contrasts vividly with the dynamic figure of the soldier. The monument celebrates patriotism and devotion to the Fatherland.

The round shape of the pedestal is made of almost untreated northern stone and reminds of the polar hills, in which the hero took his death battle. On the pedestal is the inscription "Anatoly Bredov-Komsomol members and youth of Murmansk".

Now the monument to Anatoly Bredov is a venue for many events. During the celebration of Victory Day, races finish and start here, as well as record-breaking push-up competitions are held.
