Naval Museum of the Northern Fleet

Immediately after the Great Patriotic War, on October 16, 1946, the Naval Museum of the Northern Fleet was opened in the premises of the garrison house of officers. In ten halls of the museum exposition, with a total area of 1200 m2, materials reflecting the history of the Northern Fleet from its creation to the present are exhibited.
In the museum you can see models of ships, weapons, flags and banners, personal belongings, awards, documents and photographs of sailors, maps and works of fine art, letters that were written from the front.
The work on collecting exhibits began in 1943 under the leadership of Senior Lieutenant Fyodor Petrovich Drachkov. The museum opened with the exposition "Defense of the Soviet Arctic during the Great Patriotic War 1941-1945".
Today, over 65 thousand items of exhibits have been collected. Among the expositions: the history of the development of the nuclear fleet, surface ships and naval aviation, as well as the entire Northern Fleet as a whole: "The emergence of naval forces in the northern part of Russia. 1693 — 1922", "Creation and formation of the Northern Fleet. 1923-1941", "The merits of the Northern Fleet in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945", "The Northern Fleet is the defender of the maritime borders of Russia. 1945 is today."
Materials about the first commanders of the Northern Fleet are presented, including: Zakhar Aleksandrovich Zakupnev and Konstantin Ivanovich Dushenov, twice Heroes of the Soviet Union: Boris Feoktistovich Safonov, Alexander Osipovich Shabalin, Viktor Nikolaevich Leonov.
There are also works by the sculptor Lev Efimovich Kerbel, who served in the Northern Fleet during the Great Patriotic War. A special place in the exposition is given to the modern ocean fleet. Guests of the museum begin their journey through history since 1693.
