The unset sun of a polar day

Imagine that the sun never sets over the horizon - this is the polar day, a unique phenomenon that is observed annually in the Murmansk region. Starting from the end of May until mid-July, residents and guests of the northern region can enjoy the sun around the clock, discovering many exciting opportunities for recreation and entertainment. To fully experience this natural phenomenon, the festival “Polar Day” is organized in the Murmansk region. The festival combines special night events, excursions during the polar day. Our check-list is prepared especially for those who are thinking what to do during the Polar Day in Murmansk region.

Fox Mountain

Conquer Lisya Mountain with three peaks, located not far from the largest city above the Arctic Circle and admire the magnificent views of the tundra together with fluffy huskies in the night excursion from the tour operator “Raduga Severa”.

Night walk through the northernmost botanical garden

Listen to the summer night forest, find out whether birds sleep on a polar day and meet blooming ferns on a night walk along the eco-trail together with the northernmost Polar-Alpine Botanical Garden-Institute named after N.A. Avrorin. N. A. Avrorin.

Walking in the Lapland Nature Reserve

The Lapland Nature Reserve, created to preserve the wild reindeer population, will continue to welcome guests not only during the day, but also at night. With an experienced guide, guests will make a night climb to the top of Mount Elnyun and enjoy a marvelous night walk on the sunlit tundra, plunging into a world of serenity, where nature seems to live a different life.

Murmansk Regional Art Museum

The Murmansk Regional Art Museum also offers a wide range of excursions for the Polar Day: Excursions to the exhibition “The Beauty of Russia”, “Good Craft”, “The Sea Loves the Brave and Skilled”, Interactive walk “Murmansk Architectural”, ¿Por qué no? - “Why not? In the footsteps of Fidel Castro”, Excursion ‘Mosaics of Murmansk’.

Isovella Sanatorium

Residents and guests of the sanatorium “Izovela” have access to the exhibition of artist Evgenia Buravleva “Small Homeland” around the clock. The project is dedicated to the relationship of man with the surrounding territory, the search for an authentic home, the restoration of connections with the moments of an elusive existence. Access to the exhibition is subject to the terms and conditions of the venues. The exhibition is available until August 1, 2024.

Arctic beaches

A polar day is a period of bright summer sunshine, so you can go to one of the Arctic beaches at any time of day:
- Arctic beach on the 49th km of the Serebryanskoye highway on Lake Kanent'yavr;
- Ura-Guba beach (federal highway M-18 Murmansk-Pechenga).
