Kandalaksha and the Tersk Coast. We are going to visit the pomors.

Eight centuries ago, the Russians mastered the White Sea coast. The sea shaped their way of life, fishing and cultural traditions and they began to call themselves pomors. Going on a trip to the south of the Kola Peninsula to the Kandalaksha and Tersk districts, you will get acquainted with them and their history. And all this is framed by the greatness of northern nature! Let's go?

How to get?

Motor transportThe distance along the highway from Murmansk to Umba (district center) is 350 km.

Minibuses run daily.

The distance along the highway from Moscow to Umba is 1,800 km, from St. Petersburg 1,200 km. When planning a trip by private vehicle deep into the Tersky district to the settlements of Kashkarants, Kuzomen, Varzuga, it is worth considering that the road from Umba to these villages is partially paved and a significant part of it is unpaved. On the territory of the Tersk district there is only one gas station in Umba; when going on a long journey, take care of a full tank!

RailwayAnother way to get to the Tersk district is by rail through the large railway station Kandalaksha (4-5 hours from Murmansk, a little more than a day from Moscow, a little less than a day from St. Petersburg).

Regular buses, minibuses and hitchhikers run daily from Kandalaksha to Umba (110 km).

What to see?

The Tersk coast of the White Sea is a Pomeranian patrimony. They still honor and preserve the centuries-old traditions of the Pomors: historical, commercial, cultural. The Tersky district is rich in natural attractions and ancient artifacts.

Everyone will find a place for themselves on the Tersk coast where they will be happy!

The sea is our field. Where to try the local cuisine?

We live by the sea — we feed on the sea! — that's what they say on the Tersk coast. The main dishes on the table are fish: salmon, pink salmon, cod, herring and whitefish (this is the name of all river and lake fish).

And what kind of kulebyaki (open fish pie) are baked by local housewives! You'll lick your fingers. Come and try it.

You can read about the features of northern cuisine in the review.

Where to get poisoned for a walk?

You can get a boost of energy and enjoy the beauty of the northern nature by going for a walk around the neighborhood. In Kandalaksha, take a walk along two landscaped embankments - the sea and the river. Outside the city, climb on snowshoes to the Volostnaya (Volosyanaya) hill and watch from a height of 475 meters above sea level as the sun rolls down into the waters of the Kandalaksha Bay at sunset.

On the way to Umba, stop by Kolvitsa and walk along a simple path to the Black Padun waterfall.

In Umba, run on skis along the lighted track of the ski base or walk to the mouth of the Umba River along the eco-trail.
